The characteristics of changes of the coasts and beaches of the Haizheu Bay depend mainly on dynamics of near shore waters resulting longshore drift.Particularly duriing the years 1128-1855 the Yellow River, famous for its abundance of sediments, forced its way through the Huai River into the sea, causing complicate changes in coasts and beaches at the north part of the Jiangsu province and the HaiZhon Bay.Under the action of a great deal of sediments, the delta gradully moved outward with the Bay shallowed and the offshore islands and shoals directly eonnetted with land. The former wavy sea became fertile plain. This is entirely due to the transport of sediments downstream by The Yellow River. After 1855, the Yellow River changed its course northward at the lower reaches, as a result of which sediments supply reduced suddenly in this coastal area with corresponding strengthening of wave and tidal current forces, That led to the erosion and recession of snuthern coasts and beaches in the area.
